Type 1 Diabetes Caregiver Support: 3 Emotional Well-Being Tips

Type 1 Diabetes Family Stacking Hands - Type Won Coaching

Did you know that nearly 75% of parents of children with type 1 diabetes experience moderate to high levels of diabetes-related distress, and more than 40% report symptoms of anxiety, according to a study published in Diabetes Care?

If you’ve felt overwhelmed, exhausted, or frustrated, please know you’re not alone! Being a type 1 diabetes caregiver demands a lot – mentally, physically, emotionally, and financially. You’re not only putting on a brave face for your child but also managing the complexities of diabetes around the clock.

It can be a lot, especially on top of other responsibilities like working a full-time job, caring for your family, and taking care of your own health.

In today’s post, I want to focus on the emotional side of being a type 1 diabetes caregiver. This topic often doesn’t get enough attention, leaving many feeling overwhelmed and alone.

Common emotional T1D challenges

Before we dive into the tools, let’s acknowledge some of the emotional challenges a type 1 diabetes caregiver may face.

1. Daily stressors

Diabetes requires 24/7 attention, and no two days are the same. From working to balance blood sugar to ensuring your T1D warrior has all their supplies, constant attention is required.

2. Impact on personal life

Diabetes can significantly impact other areas of life. Maybe your relationship has had to take a back seat, and date nights are rare. Or you’re struggling to balance work demands with being a fierce T1D mama. It’s important to acknowledge how these other areas of your life can change.

3. Spectrum of emotions

Diabetes can bring a wide range of emotions. You’re not only regulating your own emotions but also supporting your child whose life has changed, as well as your partner and other children.

It’s normal to feel a multitude of feelings, and the tools below can help you gain more confidence while befriending challenging emotions like anger, frustration and fear.

Tool #1: Prioritize self-care

It’s crucial to find simple and creative ways to reconnect with ourselves daily. When we’re filled with love and vibrant energy, we can give even more to our families without neglecting our own needs. Self-care serves as our pathway to achieving this balance.

Self-care encourages us to slow down, reconnect, and reflect on our choices, essential elements for a thriving life. Research highlights that type 1 diabetes caregivers who prioritize self-care practices, such as physical exercise and nourishing meals, experience reduced stress levels and enhanced overall well-being.

Moreover, self-care plays a pivotal role in preventing burnout and ensuring high-quality care for our children. Establishing a consistent self-care routine doesn’t demand extensive hours; rather, it’s about the intention behind each practice.

I personally enjoy crafting a self-care list every few months. It eliminates guesswork on busier days, allowing me to effortlessly select activities aligned with my current needs and desires. Some of my favorites include:

  • Walking in nature without any headphones
  • Brewing a cup of Bengal Spice tea
  • Listening to a meditation – my favorites are by Sarah Blondin
  • Moving my body – some awesome workout apps being SWEAT and ToneItUp

Tip #2: Infuse joy

Diabetes is serious, and it can be challenging to maintain a lighthearted and joyful perspective. On more emotional days, try to infuse more joy into your life. Find simple ways to laugh and lighten the load.

Lately, I enjoy unwinding with a silly TV show that makes me laugh. Or perhaps you can discover a hobby or passion you love, or spend time with someone in your inner circle who always makes you smile. Leaning toward joy can help lift the weight off your shoulders.

Tip #3: Build a support network

How can you involve your family and friends in your diabetes journey? Perhaps you can ask a loved one to help organize diabetes supplies or attend doctor’s appointments.

For example, my sister and I make it a priority to connect every week. Our calls, whether about diabetes or other topics, always leave me feeling lighter and recharged. Who can you speak with for support?

Additionally, there are many support networks beyond your immediate family. Resources like a trusted healthcare practitioner or health coach are great starting points!

Final thoughts

As a type 1 diabetes caregiver, your well-being is just as crucial as the care you provide. Prioritizing self-care helps maintain your energy and resilience, while infusing joy into your daily routine lightens the emotional load and releases stress.

Building a support network ensures you have a community to lean on during challenging times. Remember, you deserve to have your needs met and prioritize your health.

These three tips are great ways to foster type 1 diabetes caregiver support. They also support you in approaching the diabetes journey with joy, patience, courage, understanding, and a ton of love in your heart.
