Hey Mama! Do you ever have those days where you just can’t seem to get your feet under you? Maybe you started with the perfect to-do list, only to have the day head in a completely different direction. Trust me, I’ve been there too.
When you’re navigating T1D caregiving, the pivot days are REAL! Between blood sugar checks, deciding what to make for dinner, getting everyone to activities (with everything in tow!), family needs, and being present for your little ones—the list goes on.
And when the day feels overwhelming, our own needs often get pushed to the back burner.
But what if creating a little more calm and confidence didn’t mean overhauling your whole routine? What if, instead of fighting those pivot days, we learned to flow with them?
Here are 3 simple, quick wins you can start using today to feel more grounded—even on the busiest days. My hope is these calming strategies for busy T1D moms will also bring a little more ease to your family’s T1D journey. Let’s dive in!
Win #1: Start Your Day With a Confidence Cue!
Although there are tons of things we can’t control about how our days unfold, one thing we can control is how we start our days! That’s why I always encourage my clients to become just a little more intentional about how they begin each morning—and it starts with the Confidence Cue.
Did you know research from the National Institutes of Health shows that using short, positive cues or affirmations can reduce stress and improve problem-solving skills?
So instead of hitting snooze a bunch (although let’s be real—we’ve all been there!) or turning to social media, try starting your day by checking in with yourself.
Choose a simple phrase or reminder you tell yourself each morning like:
- “I’m leading with calm today.”
- “I’m surrounded by love and support.”
This quick mindset check can help set the tone before the day takes over. Small words can become powerful anchors.
Win #2: Simplify One Daily Task
When I’m starting to feel overwhelmed or a little frenetic, I often go back to my to-do list and ask myself: “Of all these items, what’s absolutely essential—and what’s not really needed today?”
Look for one task that feels draining and simplify it. That might mean:
- Rotating 3 easy breakfasts instead of over-planning meals.
- Prepping lunchboxes the night before.
- Asking a family member to assist with a daily diabetes care task—like ensuring AA batteries are stocked or low snacks are ready.
When we let go of all our to-do’s and “shoulds” we reduce decision fatigue and free up mental space – a total win-win!
Win #3: Create a 5-Minute Reset Ritual
When things feel overwhelming, have a quick go-to reset. It doesn’t have to be long or complicated—the most important part is that it connects you back to YOU.
Here are some favorite self-care ideas from the fierce mamas I coach:
- Step outside for a breath of fresh air.
- Do 5 deep breaths with your child.
- High-five your child and call it a “RESET” button (jump up and say “RESET!” together!).
- Grab a glass of water and stretch.
Short, reliable moments of calm give you control in the chaos.
Wrapping Up
As T1D caregivers and supporters, we carry a lot—mentally, physically, and emotionally. The goal is never to be the “perfect caregiver” or to never feel overwhelmed.
Instead, it’s about leading with the best of intentions, caring for ourselves, role modeling for our families, and flowing with the day when things don’t go as planned.
Small, calming strategies for busy T1D moms—taken consistently—can make a big difference in how you navigate the T1D journey.
Please remember, you’re already doing an amazing job! Let’s now offer ourselves a little more grace and use these quick wins to bring more ease to our days.
