Summer is just around the corner—and with it comes sunshine, backyard barbecues, popsicles, pool parties, and plenty of outdoor fun!
But if you’re supporting a child with Type 1 Diabetes, you might also feel a wave of “how on earth do we navigate all this?” Summer’s full of moving pieces and unpredictable routines.
I get it. While I’m not a T1D mama myself, I am a proud T1D spouse and a mom who deeply understands the constant care that diabetes requires. I’ve seen firsthand how full the caregiving plate can feel.
As an integrative health coach who specializes in supporting T1D moms, I’ve seen how summer fun can sometimes be a challenge when routines are tossed out the window and replaced with camp snacks, birthday parties, and unpredictable schedules.
So today, I’m sharing three simple, powerful summer tips for T1D to help you feel more confident navigating the season—and beyond. Let’s dive in!
Tip #1: Proactive Communication Is Your Superpower
Whether it’s a summer camp counselor, a grandparent babysitting for the afternoon, or the local pool staff—sharing the basics of your child’s diabetes care is key.
Instead of going into every detail, focus on what matters most to you. What do you want this person to know to help your child feel safe and supported?
Here are a few simple ways to open that conversation:
- A short, written diabetes care overview (include signs of low/high blood sugar + what to do)
- A quick walk-through of your child’s diabetes supplies—keep it casual and clear
- A check-in call or text before longer outings or camp days
Action Step
Have ongoing touch points (weekly or even monthly) with your trusted summer helpers to help reduce confusion and give everyone more peace of mind.
Tip #2: Prep for the “What Ifs”
Summer activities often mean being away from home—and that means having a solid plan for the unexpected.
What are your family’s go-to items for diabetes care? How can you get everything compiled and organized before a summer night out or swim meet?
Here are a few ideas:
- Fast-acting low snacks (common examples include glucose tabs or juice boxes). Always work with your child’s healthcare provider to determine the best low snack options for their needs.
- Back-up supplies (test strips, extra CGM sensor if possible, insulin pen, etc.)
- A simple note explaining your child’s care needs
Action Step
Create a small “grab-and-go” pouch with all your low snacks and essentials. Keeping one in each frequently used bag (pool tote, backpack, car) can save major stress.
Tip #3: Plan Ahead with Blood Sugar Supportive Swaps
Let’s be honest—summer is full of outings and get-togethers, many of them packed with sugar-laden treats like s’mores, birthday cupcakes, and snow cones. Of all the summer tips for T1D we’ve covered, this third one might just be the most impactful!
Your T1D warrior shouldn’t feel left out, and thankfully, they don’t have to!
With a few proactive swaps and simple strategies, you can help your child feel included and support steadier blood sugars.
Here are a few winning ideas:
- Pair higher-carb treats with a protein or fat (like nut butter with a banana, or a cheese stick with popcorn)
- Offer lower-sugar versions of classics (like homemade low-carb popsicles made with real fruit and Greek yogurt)
- If a high-sugar day happens (it’s life!), plan a walk or active play session afterward to help support more stable blood sugars
Action Step
Talk with your child ahead of events about options they can enjoy. Giving them a say fosters empowerment and confidence. Our family also likes to bring along our own snacks or supportive sweet treats, so we’re prepared and aligned with our values.
Let’s Wrap Up!
Summer is such a fun time of year! Between pool days, 4th of July celebrations, and more time with friends and family, it’s a season to be social and relaxed.
Luckily, these three summer tips for T1D can help you and your T1D warrior enjoy all the fun while supporting more balanced blood sugar, stable energy, and peace of mind.
