Hey mama, it’s no secret that grocery prices are climbing. And when you’re prioritizing blood sugar-supportive options for your T1D family, those bills can feel pretty steep. Almond flour instead of traditional flour, Swerve instead of sugar, organic produce—these choices all add up.

But here’s the good news: these choices matter. They’re investments in your family’s health and well-being, helping to create a more balanced and supportive diabetes journey.

Today, I’m sharing two simple mindset shifts to help you feel confident about those extra dollars spent.

Mindset Shift #1: See Food as a Long-Term Investment

Think of your grocery bill as an investment in your family’s future. When I feel that moment of sticker shock, I like to pause and ask myself:

  • “Do we really need this item?”
  • “How will this support our health in the long run?”

Once I’ve decided an item’s essential, I remind myself that what I’m buying isn’t just food—it’s an investment in our family’s well-being and a more balanced diabetes journey.

It’s super powerful when we realize that the choices we make today can help reduce long-term medical expenses and health challenges in the future. And for T1D families, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Did you know that research shows stabilizing blood sugar with nutrient-dense foods can:

  • Minimize complications associated with T1D
  • Keep energy and mood levels stable
  • Help everyone feel their best

As a T1D caregiver and champion, I want that for my family and yours!

Type Won Tip #1:

So the next time you’re at the grocery store, remember:

  • Your groceries aren’t just food—they’re a proactive investment in your family’s health.
  • Each choice you make is building a foundation for lasting wellness.

One cart, one meal, and one mindful decision at a time, you’re shaping a healthier, stronger future for you and your family.

Mindset Shift #2: Your Menu Becomes Your Membranes

I love this idea from health champion Shawn Stevenson: “Your menu becomes your membranes.” It’s a powerful reminder that the food we eat literally becomes part of our bodies—our cells, energy, and ability to thrive.

When you prioritize blood sugar-supportive swaps, you’re doing more than just putting food on the table. You’re nourishing your family at a cellular level. For example:

  • Choosing Swerve over regular table sugar reduces blood sugar spikes while satisfying sweet cravings.
  • Opting for real butter instead of margarine provides your family with healthy fats that fuel energy and brain health.

Type Won Tip #2:

Next time you’re grocery shopping, pause and ask yourself:

  • “How is this food supporting our family’s health?”
  • “What’s one small swap I can make today to nourish my family better?”

Every mindful choice you make brings your T1D family closer to thriving—not just surviving.

You’re Doing Amazing, Mama!

Higher grocery bills can definitely feel frustrating—trust me, I’ve been there! But with the right mindset, you can see them as an investment in your family’s well-being. Every small swap you make today is shaping a healthier, stronger future for the ones you love most.

So as we wrap up for today, I leave you with this:

Next time you’re out grocery shopping, what mindset will you bring to the experience?

Maybe you’ll picture your T1D champion and know that one small blood sugar-supportive change will help not only them but the whole family. Or maybe you’ll create a list so you’re not tempted by unnecessary items. Whatever approach you choose, I encourage you to get creative and keep it simple.
