As a T1D mom, you’ve got a lot going on—from balancing blood sugar levels to keeping your family running smoothly. It’s easy to feel like there’s no time left for yourself.
But one thing that has always been clear in our family’s own diabetes journey is this: a strong support system is everything.
It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day: the insulin dosages, carb counts, CGM readings, and numbers. But building the right team around you is just as crucial for your well-being as managing those numbers.
When things get tough or feel uncertain, your support team becomes even more important. These are the people who are there for you—just as you are there for your T1D warrior. They celebrate your wins and stand by you through the tough moments.
In today’s post, we’ll dive into three simple, yet powerful steps to building a strong support system as a T1D mom. Let’s get started!
Step #1: Identify Your Needs
First things first, let’s take a moment to reflect on what support you already have—and what might still be missing. As a busy T1D mom, it’s easy to overlook the gaps in your support system, but identifying what’s missing is the first step in filling those gaps.
Who in your circle already offers emotional support or practical help? Maybe you already have a reliable healthcare team but need a little extra emotional support, or perhaps you could use someone to step in occasionally to help watch your little ones so you can recharge.
Action Step
Take five minutes today to jot down all the support you currently have in place. Then, ask yourself: Where do I feel I need more help? Do I need more healthcare support, emotional support, or a little of both? What can I start working on today to fill those gaps?
Step #2: Focus on One Area at a Time
Trying to tackle everything at once can feel overwhelming. So, instead of diving into everything, pick just one area of support you can focus on for now.
Whether it’s finding a new healthcare provider, scheduling more “me” time, or reaching out to a friend for regular emotional support—choose one area to start.
Why does this work?
I always encourage my clients to focus on one thing at a time. Starting with one small change helps build momentum and prevents that “overwhelm” from taking over. Plus, small wins give you the confidence to keep going and momentum builds!
Action Step
Pick one area where you need more support and take action on it this week. If you’re unsure where to start or find it hard to focus on just one thing (trust me, I’ve been there!), I highly recommend the book Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less. It’s a fantastic resource to help you narrow your focus and prioritize what truly matters.
Or maybe it’s reaching out to a friend for regular check-ins. Whatever it is, set a clear, realistic goal and give yourself a deadline for when you’ll make it happen.
Taking that first step will help you move closer to the support you need, and you can start to feel better right away.
Step #3: Nurture Your Support System
Now that you’ve started building your support system, it’s time to nurture those relationships. It’s not just about finding help—it’s about keeping those connections strong. Reach out regularly to your healthcare team, friends, and family to keep the support flowing.
Remember…
Your support system isn’t static. It’s built on ongoing communication and trust. Whether it’s a weekly check-in or simply letting someone know when you need help, maintaining that connection is key to making your support system last.
Action Step
This week, can you schedule a regular check-in with someone in your support circle—whether it’s a friend, family member, or healthcare provider? Keep those connections alive and know that they’ll be there for you when you need them.
Let’s Wrap Up!
Building a strong support system as a T1D mom isn’t a one-time task—it’s an ongoing journey. By identifying your needs, focusing on one step at a time, and reaching out for the support you deserve, you can create a community that helps you thrive, not just survive.
Remember, you don’t have to do it all alone, and asking for help is one of the strongest things you can do.
You’re doing an amazing job, and by prioritizing your well-being and building a strong support system, you’ll feel more empowered and confident in your caregiving role.
