5 Proven Ways to Prepare for Every Health Coaching Session

Tip #1: Center your energy

It’s all too easy for life’s hectic energy to seep into a health coaching session. Before logging on, I always encourage clients to take a proactive approach. Can you take a moment to pause and center your energy?

For me, feeling my best starts with a simple stretch and a refreshing glass of water. Or a few drops of lavender essential oil on my wrist helps me feel calm.

Before each session, it’s essential to reflect on how you want to feel. By slowing down and tuning into our bodies, we set the stage for greater focus and ease throughout our time together.

Tip #2: Come prepared with questions

The magic of a health coaching session lies in the opportunity to reflect and brainstorm together. It’s really helpful to start the reflection process before our session begins. Even just two minutes can make a difference!

I encourage you to not overthink it. Simply keep a notebook handy throughout the week. Whenever questions, hurdles, or topics you’d like to discuss arise, jot them down.

This simple practice takes the guesswork out and conserves mental energy. When our session begins, your notebook is right there, helping us tackle questions or concerns head-on!

Tip #3: Harness a growth mindset

Along the journey of supporting a loved one with type 1 diabetes, setbacks and unexpected challenges are inevitable. However, health coaching helps us embrace progress over perfection. Rather than dwell on missed goals or missteps, coaching supports you in approaching these moments with empowerment and positivity.

Harnessing a growth mindset is essential to an empowering coaching partnership. In a coaching session, we work to reframe our greatest challenges. Rather than focusing on the negative, take back your power by asking – What can I glean from these setbacks? What strengths can I rely on during tough times?

Personally, I lean on my compassion when my T1D husband experiences tougher days due to erratic blood sugar. I pause and ask myself, ‘How can I show him he’s not alone?’ Whether it’s a simple hug or a gesture to make him smile, compassion is my north star.

Tip #4: Be open and honest

Honesty forms the cornerstone of a successful health coaching session. While it requires courage, I always encourage clients to openly share their struggles, concerns, and obstacles encountered on their health journey.

Coaches offer support, and your honesty provides valuable insight into how best to assist you in overcoming challenges and achieving your goals. There’s no shame in feeling off track. Instead, coaching serves as a compass, helping you identify strengths and opportunities to pivot towards a path that aligns more closely with your goals.

Tip #5: Create a comfortable environment

Our surroundings, whether at home or elsewhere, play a significant role in shaping our well-being. This holds true for the environment of health coaching sessions. Take a moment to envision how you want to feel and the environment in which coaching sessions are held. Do you want to feel grounded and calm? Or maybe you crave natural light to uplift your spirits.

I encourage you to infuse small touches into your space to cultivate the feeling you desire. Whether it’s lighting a candle, finding a quiet room free of distractions, or scheduling sessions when you have the most energy, such as in the morning with your favorite cup of coffee, let your environment support your journey to your fullest potential.
