3 Ways Health Coaching Supports Type 1 Diabetes Caregivers

I share simple tips, practical tools, and encouragement to help you create balance in blood sugar, movement, mindset, and more—so your family feels vibrant, strong, and ready to thrive.

I'm Allee—health coach, mom, and proud T1D caregiver who gets it.

For many type 1 diabetes caregivers, it’s often a role we never imagined having. In fact, according to research conducted by the JDRF foundation, 85% of T1D families do not have a family history of the disease.

This is really eye-opening research. It points to the fact that many T1D families are in need of support – both at the time of diagnosis and beyond.

Like you, I’ve had to navigate the many learning curves of type 1 diabetes. Despite never anticipating being a type 1 diabetes caregiver, I’ve learned to embrace and cherish this role.

Working with a health coach has been one of my greatest tools along the type 1 diabetes journey. Coaching has had a profound impact on how I show up as a T1D caregiver. And today, I’d like to outline three ways health coaching could help you along your own T1D journey.

I hope the insights below inspire you to embark upon the powerful and transformative journey of health coaching.

1. Health coaching expands the definition of health

Before pursuing my Master of Arts in Integrative Health and Wellbeing Coaching, I viewed health in a traditional sense – focusing on food and exercise. However, health coaching has expanded my perspective. Health encompasses mind, body, and spirit and is closely intertwined to our emotions, beliefs, and values.

Health coaching facilitates a deep exploration of personal values, whether through journaling, visualization, or dialogue with a trusted source, offering comfort and validation throughout the type 1 diabetes journey.

Additionally, coaching acknowledges the holistic nature of diabetes care, prioritizing a whole-person approach. Coaches understand the interconnectedness of various health aspects such as support systems, beliefs, energy levels, and stress.

I like to think of health as a puzzle, with many intricate pieces forming a beautiful picture. A health coach assists in assembling these pieces according to your preferences. Remember, with coaching, you’re always in control!

2. Health coaching improves communication skills

Nonviolent communication (NVC) is a tool I recommend to clients and also personally use. Relationships have a profound affect on our health and wellbeing. Disagreements, or moments of tension, are inevitable along the type 1 diabetes journey, yet they present opportunities for growth within families.

Coaches enhance communication skills by attentively listening and reflecting on statements or beliefs, prompting individuals to pause and evaluate their preferred communication style. Through this process, individuals can gain insights into their communication patterns and adjust as needed. Additionally, health coaches may engage in role-playing exercises to further refine communication skills.

The goal isn’t to avoid disagreements entirely. Instead of seeking perfection, health coaching equips individuals with tools for effective communication, which fosters resolution and connection.

Introduced in the 1960s by clinical psychologist Marshall Rosenberg, NVC aims to cultivate empathy and understanding through four steps:

Step 1: State your observation

Try your best to stick to the facts without judgment or emotion. For example, “I noticed you didn’t load your dishes into the dishwasher.”

Step 2: Express your feeling

Share your emotions related to the observation. For instance, “I felt frustrated and angry when you left your dishes.”

Step 3: Indicate your need

Identify the needs essential for resolving the situation. For example, “I need you to please load your dirty dishes into the dishwasher.”

Step 4: Make a request

Suggest a collaborative solution. For instance, “Can we please brainstorm together on how to address this issue or can we take ten-minutes before bed to tidy up the kitchen together?”

During the type 1 diabetes caregiver journey, emotions often arise. On challenging days, NVC helps shift frustration into cooperation. While it may take practice, health coaches are here to assist!

3. Health coaching fosters greater self-confidence

Oftentimes, making changes to our health and wellbeing isn’t black and white. Furthermore, change isn’t a linear line; just like life, it ebbs and flows. We often criticize ourselves harshly when we fall short of our goals. Personally, I’ve struggled with self-criticism many times in the past.

“I should be farther along in my business” or “why didn’t I complete that workout this morning?” are thoughts I’ve had. Luckily, the coaching relationship excels at identifying strengths over limitations. Coaches reframe limiting beliefs and foster a broader vision of health and wellbeing for their clients.

Additionally, health coaches work to understand your larger wellbeing vision. Key questions include uncovering how you wish to feel daily, in six-months, or one year from today.

Self-inquiry is super powerful. Through my own coaching experience, I’ve gained clarity on my strengths, goals and needs. Sometimes, all we need is an encouraging partner who reminds us we’re doing a great job.

Health coaches instill belief in their clients, which boosts self-confidence. This shift is vital for type 1 diabetes caregivers. Health coaching can foster confidence and positivity, benefiting the entire family.

Recognizing, honoring, and leaning into my strengths has helped me navigate the T1D caregiving journey. So, I encourage you to reflect on your top three strengths in managing type 1 diabetes. Celebrate and focus on them to thrive!
